Wastewater
Treatment - Municipal
Wastewater treatment is an area in
which Huff & Huff, Inc. (H&H) has specific expertise. The firm
has designed over twenty wastewater treatment upgrades,
including a land application system for high-strength organic
wastes, which was described in an article published in the Journal
of the Water Pollution Control Federation. H&H has handled a
variety of wastewater municipal projects and designs. A 325,000
gpd plant design was completed for municipal waste, including
nitrification and filtration.
The firm recently completed completely upgrading a 30-year old municipal plant, with the
addition of bypass treatment of high flows, rebuilt territary filters, bar screen, grit washer, and
new influent pump meters and control scheme.
A 60,000 gpd expansion of a
municipal plant was designed with process changes to a contact
stabilization system. A wastewater treatment system for a 1,500
unit trailer park was designed including nitrification and
filtration facilities. H&H's design experience also includes a
5.5 mgd treatment plant debottlenecking project for a 21 mgd
wastewater treatment plant, and an 0.5 mgd expansion using batch
biological reactors for a 1.5 mgd facility. The firm has designed
wet weather pumping facilities and has modeled an entire sewer
system utilizing U.S. EPA's SWMM Model to develop the conceptual
design for improving wet weather capture efficiency.
Wastewater design services have
been provided for five golf course/country clubs, ranging from evaluating
alternatives for sewage treatment, lift station/force main design,
upgrading a contact stabilization plant, to designing an aerobic
system using batch biological reactors followed by a percolation
system. The sequential batch reactors have been applied where
there is no available sewer or surface water discharge point.
Additional expertise in municipal
treatment plant operation is also offered. H&H has taken over
total responsibility of a 1.5 mgd municipal sewage treatment plant
(STP). As supervisor of this plant, H&H reduced effluent
violations to less than 3% of what was previously experienced. In
addition, operating expenses were reduced by over $30,000 per
year.
Sludge management is an area of
major concern to most municipalities. The firm recently completed
a sludge filter press and covered storage pad design and permitting for a
4.0 mgd municipal plant. H&H has set up a wet
application system for one community, including preparation of a
complete sludge management plan. In addition, sludge management
was an integral aspect of the previous projects described
above.
H&H has also prepared a
complete pretreatment program for a municipality, which included
sampling the industry, the STP, the receiving stream, and the
sludge, developing sewer effluent limits, a fee structure, and the
ordinance. The firm designed a 50,000 gpd anaerobic digester
supernatant SBR system to reduce the organic and ammonia load on a
treatment plant, after designing and data analysis of a 2,000 gpd
pilot study. The use of SBR to treat digester supernatant is believed to be the first such
system in the U.S.
H&H has offered specific
environmental services to communities involved with regulatory
variances and site specific rule changes. Wastewater disinfection
exemptions, ZID studies, and mixing zone studies have been
prepared, as well as high velocity diffuser designs. Recently a
high rate diffuser design was completed for a facility in Egypt. Technical
assistance in assessing environmental impact has been conducted
for numerous municipalities relating to NPDES permit negotiations
and appeals to adjusted standards requests including ammonia,
total dissolved solids, BOD, and TSS limits.
